Luna Rossa and UNESCO have announced the renewal of their partnership dedicated to ocean protection and to spreading ocean literacy. The new stage of the collaboration will accompany the Italian team throughout its campaign for the 38th America's Cup, whose decisive phases will be contested in Naples, Italy, in 2027.
The announcement was made on the International Day of the Mediterranean Sea and expands the cooperation begun in 2024, during preparations for the 37th America's Cup, held in Barcelona. As a public symbol of that commitment, the UNESCO and SEA BEYOND logos will once again appear on Luna Rossa's sails.
Sailing as a platform for awareness
The partnership will be developed within SEA BEYOND, a project created by the Prada Group and run since 2019 together with UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The programme works mainly in education for sustainability and in broadening knowledge about the ocean. According to the Prada Group, the principles of ocean literacy have already been shared with more than 38,000 students around the world.
"Sport has the power to inspire beyond competition," said Magdalena Landry, director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe. According to her, the cooperation with Luna Rossa will make it possible to promote ocean literacy, mobilise new generations and strengthen global ocean protection efforts.
Ocean&Climate Village will be held in Cagliari
One of the main initiatives of the new phase of the partnership will be another edition of the Ocean&Climate Village, a travelling, immersive and interactive scientific exhibition dedicated to the relationship between the ocean and the global climate. In October, the exhibition will be installed at Luna Rossa's base in the port of Cagliari, on the island of Sardinia.
Towards a historic America's Cup in Italy
For the first time, the competition's decisive phases will be held in Italy, with Naples hosting the Louis Vuitton Cup and the Match of the 38th America's Cup in 2027. For Luna Rossa, the edition will also carry a special meaning: the team will complete 30 years of history in 2027 and will contest its seventh America's Cup campaign.
A movement that strengthens the Ocean Economy
By bringing together sailing, research, education, design, technology, tourism and environmental conservation, the partnership presents an integrated view of the Ocean Economy. On the route to Naples, Luna Rossa will carry a global message on its sails: protecting the ocean also depends on the ability to inform, educate and inspire the next generations.
